Former choral scholar at Jesus College discovers work by Ralph Vaughan Williams

The conductor Alan Tongue (1959), a former student and Choral Scholar at Jesus College, has unearthed an unpublished and never performed work by the great British composer Ralph Vaughan Williams. Written in Williams' mid-twenties, the composition was submitted for his Cambridge Doctor of Music degree. Alan Tongue drew attention to the manuscript, which had lain in the UL for 115 years, obtained permission to transcribe it, and conducted the world première with the Bach Choir and the New Queen's Hall Orchestra.

For more information, visit his website here. You can also buy the recording of the world première here.

The Reverend Dr John Hughes 1978-2014

The College and Choir were deeply shocked and saddened by the news of the death of the Dean of Chapel, the Reverend Dr John Hughes, in a car accident on Sunday 29th June. A former undergraduate of the College, he was both an outstanding academic who inspired the students he taught, and a faithful priest and pastor who touched profoundly all those with whom he came into contact. The loss of a much-loved teacher, colleague and friend is acutely felt, as he enriched the lives of the whole College community, and our thoughts are with his family and many friends. He will be deeply missed.

The Choir decided to proceed with its planned recording between 30th June and 3rd July as a tribute to John, and the disc, due for release in early 2015, will be dedicated to his memory. The Choir was also privileged to sing at his funeral, attended by over 1000 people, in Ely Cathedral on 10th July. A warm and humorous obituary of John Hughes appeared in The Times newspaper on Tuesday 22nd July, and can be read here.
