The Reverend Dr John Hughes 1978-2014
The College and Choir were deeply shocked and saddened by the news of the death of the Dean of Chapel, the Reverend Dr John Hughes, in a car accident on Sunday 29th June. A former undergraduate of the College, he was both an outstanding academic who inspired the students he taught, and a faithful priest and pastor who touched profoundly all those with whom he came into contact. The loss of a much-loved teacher, colleague and friend is acutely felt, as he enriched the lives of the whole College community, and our thoughts are with his family and many friends. He will be deeply missed.
The Choir decided to proceed with its planned recording between 30th June and 3rd July as a tribute to John, and the disc, due for release in early 2015, will be dedicated to his memory. The Choir was also privileged to sing at his funeral, attended by over 1000 people, in Ely Cathedral on 10th July. A warm and humorous obituary of John Hughes appeared in The Times newspaper on Tuesday 22nd July, and can be read here.

Singing Day Returns To Jesus College
On 21 June, fifty children aged between six and eleven, joined by volunteers from Jesus College Choir and the Choir of Little St Mary's Church, came to Jesus College to take part in a singing day led by Hilary Jones. After a few warm ups, work began on the afternoon's concert. Pieces varied from simple tunes, such as 'The Banjo Song', to songs in several parts – particular favourites being 'The Scoobeedoo Song', and 'The Human Drum Kit'. As well as the pieces worked on in the afternoon, the choristers of Jesus College, conducted by Mark Williams, and the Choir of Little St Mary's, conducted by Simon Jackson, both sang a few pieces from their regular repertoire. The concert finished with another favourite, the jazzy number 'Feeling Good'. We would like to thank all those involved in the Singing Day, but special thanks go to Hilary for making the day such a fun and inspiring experience for everyone.
