To mark the 350th anniversary of the birth of Henry Purcell, 200th anniversary of the birth of Felix Mendelssohn, and the 50th anniversary of the birth of James MacMillan, the College Choir performed a diverse programme highlighting the great musical talent of these three composers. Purcell’s anguished Hear my Prayer was contrasted with his joyful setting of Psalm 122, I was Glad, while Mendelssohn’s six seasonal motets for double choir provided a nice tour through the liturgical year. Turning to the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, James MacMillan’s Sedebit Dominus Rex, Christus Vincit and A New Song transported the audience to an entirely different sound world, shaded with the harmonic strains of MacMillan’s native Scotland.
